Why We Get Our Flu Shots
It's November which means that cold and flu season is back. The weather is getting colder and we are inside more. The kids are back in school which always seems to bring home a bunch of sicknesses. So far, we have had a better year than normal- I think the kids are finally getting some immunity from years of being exposed to sick germs and getting plenty of colds. Early this fall, we did get our flu shots for the year and I'm going to talk all about why it is important to get your flu shots.
At the end of summer, I took my kids for their pre-school physicals. I wasn't planning on getting their flu shots yet because we usually wait until September or October but our doctor's office had just gotten them in. I convinced the kids that we would get our shots that day and we did. One of my kids was not happy at the unexpected vaccine after I told them they were not getting any shots that day but afterwards, understood that it was for their health.
Troy and I got our vaccines as well at CVS. I love making our appointment online and going to the pharmacy area to get it. This was our best year yet and we were in and out in 5 minutes flat. I love knowing that we are better protected from the flu.
I partnered with I Vaccinate to share that vaccines are a safe and effective way to keep your family healthy. I Vaccinate provides information and tools using real medical science and research to help Michigan parents protect their kids from vaccine-preventable diseases.
Here are some facts from I Vaccinate that are important
- Vaccines protect kids and teens from 16 vaccine-preventable diseases. One of those is HPV which can cause 6 types of cancer.
- Vaccines are safe and help protect those around us.
- Most parents do vaccinate their children but there is tons of misinformation out there so please talk to your child's doctor about any questions.
- As of June 2024, 67.5% of kids ages 19-36 months were up to date on their vaccines putting them at risk.
Why We Get Our Flu Shots
To be totally honest, we get our flu shots because there is nothing worse than feeling sick. As a family of 5, there is always a pretty good chance that someone is not feeling their best and we try to reduce that as much as possible. If the flu shot lowers our risk of illness, I am certainly signing my family up! As you can see in these photos, we love to get out and have fun so we get our flu shots so we can keep living our best lives!
Why to Get a Flu Shot
The flu causes 140,000 to 710,000 hospitalizations a year.
The flu causes 12,000-51,000 deaths per year.
The flu is especially serious for young children, older people and those with chronic health conditions.
The flu shot is safe, effective, and your family’s best protection against serious disease.

If you have had the flu before, you know it feels awful and I highly recommend getting the flu shot annually. It is 100% covered by many insurances, is very quick, and feels just like a little pinch. The benefits outweigh the risks!

I had to have my thyroid aspirated three times and each was after I had the flu shot. I understand why some receive but I will not due to my reaction to it.
