5 Ways to Support Your Dog's Wellness

5 Ways to Support Your Dog's Wellness including regular exercise, healthy foods, and a joint health supplement!

If you've been around the blog for awhile, you know that I am a huge dog lover. We have always had dachshunds and still have our amazing mini dachshund Jaxen who is 13 1/2 years young. He is doing amazing! We also got a new dog named Ford who you will read about below. The dogs are important members of our family, so we do everything that we can to make sure that they are as healthy as possible. Today, I want to share 5 ways that we support our dog's wellness!

Meet Ford

I'm so excited to share that back in December, we got a new puppy named Ford! He is a German Shepherd mix and is about 10 months old now. We adopted him from an amazing dog rescue. Unfortunately, Ford had been in a situation of neglect. My husband Troy has wanted a German Shepherd dog for years and I was the one who was resistant to getting a large dog after always having dachshunds. Right before Christmas, I surprised the kids and Troy with the dog. They found out 4 minutes before we got him!! It was the best Christmas surprise and something that I will always remember. He is a wonderful dog that we love so much.

5 Ways to Support Your Dog's Wellness

1. Taking the dogs on frequent walks

Since Ford is a hyper puppy, we make sure he gets exercise almost every single day. He is a runner and runs with Troy or I up to 3 days a week which is very exciting for us! He also walks the kids to school many days of the week. Jaxen doesn't walk daily since he is 13 1/2 but we try to get him out for walks a few days a week. Walking your dog helps keep them healthy, gives them socialization, and helps beat boredom.

2. Brush your dog's teeth

Jaxen has had a lot of dental issues which the vet says is common for dachshunds so when we got Ford, I wanted to make sure that we were doing everything that we can to prevent dental issues. We brush his teeth twice a week and Jaxen's once a week (Jaxen DOES NOT like having his teeth brushed so we do it as often as he will allow). Brushing a dog's teeth is the best way to prevent dental disease, tooth loss, infections, bad breath, and tartar buildup.

3. Give your dog a joint health supplement

We have been giving the dogs the Terry Naturally Active Mobility Supplement for joint health with glucosamine, collagen and chondroitin. This supplement promotes cartilage development, supports healthy joints and connective tissue, helps to maintain joint lubrication, and can help with occasional stiffness and discomfort. It comes in chewable tablet form which the dogs do not mind taking. They take 1-2 per day (depending on the dog's weight) and I love knowing that I am doing what I can to help my dogs!

4. Give your dog nutritious snacks

Our dachshund Jaxen never has liked fruits or vegetables until we got Ford. Ford will literally eat anything so we give him a lot of fresh produce. Now, Jaxen loves fruits and vegetables too! Some great produce options to give your dog are: carrots, watermelon, apples, blueberries, green beans, zucchini, broccoli and celery. Skip raisins, avocados, onions, garlic, lemons and grapes as they are toxic to dogs.

5. Take them to the vet

It is important to have your dog regularly checked out by the vet. We do annual appointments to get the dogs their annual shots and a checkup by the vet. As things come up, we take them in for appointments as well. The vet can detect health issues that your dog may be having early so if you have a concern, get them in as soon as possible.
