Tips for Motivating Yourself to Workout in the Winter + Giveaway
Tips for motivating yourself to workout in the winter including scheduling your workouts, having the right gear, having something to look forward to after and more!
Ah winter workouts, they make you feel great but it can be so hard mentally to get going. When it is warm out, it is easy to get outside and go for a walk, go for a run, a bike ride, kayaking, etc. When it's freezing though, it is so much easier to stay inside and lounge around. I love working out in the morning and man, getting out of bed sometimes to get going for a workout lately has been hard. I want to share my best tips for motivating yourself to workout in the winter.

Tips for Motivating Yourself to Workout in the Winter
1. Schedule your workouts
In my head, I have three days a week fully scheduled for my workouts so I don't skip them. Monday mornings, I do a BodyFit by Amy YouTube strength video. These are anywhere from 20-35 minutes. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, I run 5.5 miles with my dad. The other days, I mostly walk in the winter- often on the treadmill. By scheduling your workouts, you are so much more likely to do them. I get mad at myself if I skip my workout so I try to make sure to follow my schedule.
2. Dress for the weather
Over the last few years, I stocked up on cold weather workout gear so I can easily get outside for a run in the winter. On a snowy day, I bought quality snow boots so I can go sledding with the kids. I find that having a really good running hat and gloves are important for running in the cold weather. Moisture wicking gear is helpful to for a winter workout outside. For inside on the treadmill or for a strength workout, it's awesome because you can wear whatever you want like shorts and a tank top.
3. Have something to look forward to
After every run I go on, I drink Ultima Replenisher Electrolyte Drink Mix and have for over a year! It gives my the electrolytes that I need after my run so I don't get a headache like I used to from dehydration and is something to look forward to. My favorite flavors are the cherry pomegranate and all three of the Mocktini flavors.
When I'm thirsty while out on my run, I get excited for these delicious flavors of Ultima to rehydrate with. Also, another thing to look forward to is coffee and breakfast! Ultima comes in small tubs and stickpacks and you just mix it into water. The stickpacks are super convenient to take when you travel- I took these with me everywhere we traveled this summer and they were great.
Ultima has no sugar or calories in it. It has electrolytes, trace minerals, vitamin C and zinc. They taste delicious and encourage me to drink more after I go running. I mix them into about 20 ounces of water and drink it before I hop in the shower.
4. Think about how great you'll feel
Half of the reason that I make sure that I am so consistent with my exercise is because it affects my mood so much. I can't skip more than a day of some kind of movement without noticing the affects on my mood. Therefore, I try to get out for at least a walk each day. When I am feeling lazy, I try to think about how much better I will feel if I just get out there and get some movement!
5. Meetup with a friend
If you're going to meet up with someone to exercise with, you are so much more likely to go. I like walking with my mom or a couple different friends. I like meeting up with my dad for our runs. We walk with the kids often and on the rare date we get, Troy and I love exercising together. I love to talk (haha!) and chatting with someone while exercising is so motivating.
