Healthy Thumbprint Cookies Recipe

I made these cookies last year and recently found the pictures stored on my computer and decided, it was time to finally share the recipe. Thumbprint cookies are a classic recipe for my family and I wanted to try them using whole wheat flour to make them a little healthier. They turned out amazing and this will be a recipe that we make every single year as a family!

What flour to use for thumbprint cookies?

When using white whole-wheat flour, I have found that it bakes almost exactly the same as regular all-purpose flour. Using whole-wheat flour adds more fiber and sometimes, more vitamins than all-purpose flour. It is affordable (I usually just buy store-brand) and works in almost any recipe.

What type of jam to use for thumbprint cookies?

Use your very favorite jam for these thumbprint cookies! I love a super tasty raspberry jam or strawberry jam. To vary the cookies, I used both for this recipe. My favorite was the strawberry but Troy loved the raspberry the most. I recommend using a jam instead of a jelly for the best texture and taste. I have a favorite low-sugar strawberry jam that works perfect for these cookies.

These cookies can be made anytime of year but are especially delicious during the holidays when you want to make Christmas cookies. These make great gifts and last at least a week. They also freeze well!

How to Make Healthy Thumbprint Cookies

You can make these cookies without the walnuts but I don't recommend it. When the walnuts bake onto the cookies, they are so delicious. Plus, it adds a little bit of protein, fiber and healthy fats!
