Taco Salad with Homemade Tortilla Bowls
Taco Salad with Homemade Tortilla Bowls are loaded with seasoned ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, salsa, cheddar cheese and more. Served in a baked crispy flour tortilla bowl.
Did anyone else grow up going to Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurant and ordering the taco salad which came in a probably fried tortilla bowl? I did! I used to go with my mom and order this all the time. They closed a long time ago but I was thinking that I know my kids love taco salads and I know that they would love a taco salad in a homemade tortilla bowl! I got experimenting in the kitchen and came up with this delicious recipe.
Taco Salad with Homemade Tortilla Bowls Ingredients
-Seasoned ground beef with homemade taco seasoning- I never buy taco seasoning because it is high in salt so I just make my own with chili powder, cumin, garlic powder and onion powder. Super easy and takes almost zero extra time.
To make sure the ground beef is cooked through (160 degrees F), I use my Taylor thermometer. It takes the temperature of the beef in several seconds and folds up really easily for small storage spaces.

-Romaine lettuce- In Mexican-style recipes, iceberg lettuce is often used but it has little nutrition value. Romaine lettuce is rich in vitamin K, folate and vitamin A making it a better choice. It is still crunchy though so it works really well in taco salad.
-Tomatoes- Any kind of fresh tomatoes will work!
-Shredded cheddar cheese
-Plain Greek yogurt or sour cream- So delicious mixed with everything.
-Black olives- We don't always use these in our taco salads but the kids love them.
-Red onion or green onion
-Salsa
Optional Taco Salad Toppings
There are so many toppings you can put on a taco salad! We switch it up all the time based on what we have on hand. Here are some things we put on taco salads sometimes:
-Bell peppers
-Black beans
-Cilantro
-Corn
-Jalapenos
-Red cabbage
-Guacamole or chopped avocado
-Chopped radishes
How to Make Homemade Baked Tortilla Bowls
First of all, start with extra large tortillas so that you can make large salad bowls. Preheat oven to 325 degrees and spray flour tortillas with nonstick spray on both sides. Shape the tortillas in an oven safe bowl so that it is in the shape of a bowl. Bake for about 8-10 minutes until tortilla bowls are lightly crispy. Remove from bowls and let cool at least slightly before eating. Super easy and extra fun. My kids had a blast with these!
