Oliver Richard 8 Month Update
This month flew by with the Thanksgiving holiday plus some sickness that we were working through. This has been a huge month for Oliver with the addition of a tooth, learning to feed himself, crawling, pulling himself up to stand and more! Such a fun month.
Clothing size: 6 months, 6-12 months
Diapers: size 2
Weight: doctor's scale when sick, 3 days shy of 8 months: 15 lbs 13 oz (5th percentile)
Height: 50th percentile
Weight/Health Update:
Last month, I got very personal and shared Oliver's weight gain struggle and to be honest, we are still kind of struggling. I went to the doctor's when Oliver was 3 days shy of 8 months due to vomiting. At the time, he was 15 lbs 13 oz which takes him back down to the 5th percentile. The doctor is not concerned at all and thinks that that is normal for him. Of course, I bawled my eyes out right then and there. I have put every single effort that I can (and so has Troy) to super feed Oliver and we cannot get him beyond that 5th percentile.
The doctor told me that he doesn't look too skinny and that since my husband and I are slim, that that is probably normal for Oliver. It is hard not to feel like a failure as a mother when something like this is going on. I love my son so much and want the best for him. He is gaining weight so there is no longer a concern that he is not gaining which is good. In the last month and half, he gained 2 pounds which is pretty good I suppose.
Feedings/Sleep:
Usually this section is pretty simple and boring but unfortunately, today, I have plenty to write. Oliver is super distracted with nursing and only wanted to eat for a few minutes at a time and then is totally done. If I try to keep feeding him, he gets mad and screams or yells and pulls himself way away. This is causing my supply to diminish and making me nervous that he is not getting enough.
If any moms out there have any advice for feeding a distracted baby, I'm all ears! I've been doing some extra pumping which I hate to be honest- it is so much extra work to try to feed Oliver, then go pump, then try to feed him that bottle. He eats a ton of solids though so the doctor didn't seem to have a problem with this.
He is taking about a 5 ounce pumped bottle in the evening. He nurses first thing in the morning, about 3-4 times during the day and before bed along with the pumped bottle around 9:30 PM. He eats three meals during the day focusing in high-calorie, nutrient-dense foods.
Breakfast- whole-grain pancakes with nut butter, cheerios, oatmeal with nut butter, eggs, fruit, baby cereal with milk, etc.
Lunch/Dinner- black beans, avocado, sweet potato, various pureed vegetables, soup, meat, cheese, finely chopped cooked vegetables, pasta, etc. He tries many of the foods that we eat. He can eat a ton of food (I would say up to 1 cup of food) at a time.
This month, Oliver learned to feed himself which sometimes gives Troy and I a little break. It is the cutest to watch him use his whole fist to put one little bite in his mouth.
He is sleeping through the night and takes usually 3 naps during the day- ~9 AM, ~12 PM, ~4 PM or so. He goes to bed right around 7 PM and wakes up lately a little earlier right around 6 AM.
Milestones-
-Toys are his favorite. He loves all toys and can play with them for at least an hour at a time.
-Is the best crawler! He can crawl all over the house and quickly too. Thank goodness his sister helps me watch out for him because he goes places fast.
-Has one tiny tooth poking through!! A week shy of 8 months, I noticed a tooth poking through the bottom left hand side of his mouth. No wonder he has been fussy!
-No one is better to him than his sister!! Adalyn and him legit wrestle about 5 times a day. She pulls all of the cushions off the couch and gently wrestles around with him. He loves it! He was sick the other day and I wouldn't let him wrestle with Adalyn and he was so mad at me! He constantly wants to be by her. She also carries him all over the house which really is a sight to see. If she thinks he is in danger such as crawling too close to the Christmas tree, she picks him right up and carries him somewhere safe. I am so thankful for their love and cannot wait to see how their friendship grows!
-Pulls himself up to standing sometimes and often on his knees- If he can grab something that is a little higher than him, he can pull himself up. Imagine the shock on my face when I went in his room to get him up from his nap and he was completely standing up!!
-Loves smiling and laughing. Loves screeching and babbling. Loves to be silly- he dances in his high-chair when he sees my mom which is beyond cute.
-Celebrated his first Thanksgiving- we went to three different parties where he ate at all of them! He loved trying a bit of everything. What a special day.
-Got to meet Santa for the first time- in true Oliver fashion, he was completely calm and didn't care that a stranger was holding him.
-Nicknames- Nutty Boy, Stinky Boy
-Kind of knows the word "no"- with him crawling all over the place, we have had to use this a few times. "No Oliver, don't pull the ornaments off the tree" or "No, don't eat the dog's food!" haha.
-Oliver had his first sicknesses this month- a runny nose and coughing for a few weeks and then he vomited a couple of times the next week. : (
It has been such an exciting month with all of these changes! We love you Oliver Richard- please stop making your mommy crazy by worrying her!!
