How We Are Getting Through Cold and Flu Season
Sickness has hit in the Hernandez household. We have all been plagued with illness one right after the other. Troy came home with it first with aches and pains and feeling super tired which later turned into a dry cough. Then, both of the kids got runny noses which have lasted two weeks so far. After a week, I thought that I had somehow gotten away with not getting sick even though I was taking care of three sick family members for a week and got hit with it myself. I have had a super sore throat for four days so far and some headaches. It's interesting that we have all had very different symptoms.
I guess I know how it feels now to have the whole family sick after hearing other parents complain about it during the winter months. It sucks! I am someone who needs to get out of the house often and being cooped up is so not for me.
These are the few things that we are doing to feel better so we can get back to our normal lives:
1. Drink hot liquids
I have been drinking tea like crazy because it feels good on my sore throat. Something that seems to make me feel better this time is really cold beverages as well which didn't used to help me but feels good this illness.
2. Get enough sleep
The kids have been more tired so I make sure that they get their naps when they need them. Troy is great at taking naps. In fact, he just got home from work as I type this and he is laying down on the couch falling asleep in two seconds- haha! I cannot nap so I make sure to go to bed early enough each night so that I can get the sleep that I need to get better.
3. Try to relax
If you know me, I don't relax. I like to go, go, go and then go some more. I have been limiting exercise and have been hanging around the house mostly so that we can all get better quick.
4. Keeping well stocked on medicine and cough drops
I cannot sleep at night when I'm sick if I have drainage and teary eyes that often come with a cold so staying stocked on medicine that helps with cold symptoms has been helpful for when we need it.
We had a wedding this past weekend and I didn't want to miss it so I had to take the medicine that I needed to feel okay while we were there. I took pain medicine for my sore throat and Ricola Dual Action Honey Lemon Cough Drops to help with my sore throat as well. We stayed out late, dancing, and I didn't think about my sore throat the entire time.
These cough drops have a liquid center which is unique for cough drops. I like the taste of Ricola drops and have been using these when I am under the weather for many, many years. These drops are helpful for a cough and for a sore throat and they are Available at Walmart. I really like the flavor and they helped to make me feel a lot better. They are strong flavored which is perfect for when you are feeling under the weather.
5. Skip the dairy, for now
When you have drainage, dairy products can make it a lot worse so we skip dairy when we have a cold. This is so hard for Adalyn since she is my yogurt girl but she understands why we temporarily are skipping dairy.
