Do your kids love avocado? Mine do! Avocados were one of Adalyn's first foods and for Oliver, they were the second food that he tried. Adalyn loves both guacamole and avocado and can sometimes be found with her hand in the guacamole or stealing a slice of avocado from someone's plate at a restaurant fairly frequently.... In fact, my father-in-law goes to Mexican-town near us to buy this special guacamole for Adalyn that she loves. Also, every time we go to the grocery store, she tells me that we need to buy more avocados. She is obsessed!
Why do we love avocados so much? Well, of course they taste amazing but they also are nutrient dense. Avocados contribute nearly 20 nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, dietary fiber and phytonutrients, that are important to infant/toddler nutrition. For Oliver, I knew that I could just mash up a bit of fresh avocado quickly and that he could enjoy it. No cooking or blending required which as a busy mom, I loved!
While Oliver totally made a face the first time that I gave him avocado, it was not at all because he didn't like it. It was because he was like "Mom, what is this thing you are giving me that you call food?". He loved it and ate several small bites. Adalyn even got to give him a bite which she was super excited about and got to feel like a great big sister. The avocado's smooth, creamy consistency and mild taste makes it one of the first fresh fruits a child can enjoy.
When I recently found the most perfect avocado pool float at a store recently, I knew that I had to buy it and have a little avocado party since my whole family loves them so much.
My brother is the big guacamole maker in my family. He can whip up a huge bowl in no time at all. I have an awesome video of my husband and him making guacamole together with their own made-up song about making guacamole together. Yes, two grown men singing about avocados and making guacamole complete with dancing. It is quite a site to be seen!

For the party, I made two dishes with avocado: chicken and turkey bacon avocado wraps and vegan avocado ceviche. I was sent some recipe cards with ideas of what to make and I thought that these two would be great! The avocado ceviche features avocado, cauliflower, tomatoes, red onion, jalapeno, garlic, cilantro and lime juice. It was so tasty! We actually ate it as a salad instead of with chips and loved it that way as well. I love fresh and flavorful dips! Check out LoveOneToday.com for the full recipe!
The chicken and turkey bacon avocado wraps were simple to make and my whole family enjoyed them, especially my dad and husband. They are filled with chicken, turkey bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and of course: avocado. I love the look of pinwheel rollups so these are perfect! They are also super easy to make. Find the full recipe here.
It was so fun because we all wore avocado t-shirts! I even brought out my creative side and made Adalyn's shirt into a dress since she loves dresses and this would fit her much better. We used cute avocado plates as well and I had to include my giant 5+ foot avocado pool float! Avocado everything! Adalyn loved it so much.
Oliver got to have a little plain avocado and Adalyn enjoyed all the food, as usual. We had the party at my parent's farm up north for a little end-of-summer fun. I also made homemade salsa from garden fresh tomatoes and peppers. I made some corn on the cob with Parmesan cheese, chili powder and fresh lime juice. It was a beautiful day and only about 70 degrees so it was not too hot out.
Right before dinner, the kids swung on the swing together. They laughed the whole time! |
It was a great little party up at the farm celebrating the end of summer. Adalyn says she has a great idea today: she wants to have another avocado party. She also wants to wear her avocado dress that I made her again and again haha!
Here are some of my favorite dishes including avocados:
