Peach Mango Smoothie with Glucerna
As a nursing home dietitian, I am always thinking of ways to get my patients to eat better. At my current job, I have 150 patients and I am the RD for all of them. It is a busy job but I love it! In the elderly population (a lot of our patients are not elderly as well but are here for short-term rehab), nutritional issues are very common.

Many of my patients are diabetic, have kidney failure, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, etc. These different diseases plus advanced age can lead to a variety of nutritional issues. Common issues that I personally deal with often are patients with unwanted weight loss, wounds, patients with a feeding tube, etc.

When a patient is eating poorly, has abnormal labs, has weight loss and for many other reasons, I am consulted. I assess the patient fully to try to figure out what may be going on. My first tool is to turn to food. If someone has a good appetite and has wounds and still needs more protein or something, I will add more food.

The issue is that many of my patients do not have a good appetite and sending them a ton of food is not going to work because they will not eat ginormous portions. Therefore, I end up turning to supplements to provide extra calories, protein or whatever they need.

One supplement that we use is called Glucerna. It is made specifically for diabetics and is a lower carbohydrate and lower sugar beverage. Some people like drinking the supplement as is but many do not like the taste of different supplements.

I got to thinking how I could make these supplements taste better while still providing these nutrients to my patients. Something to note about these type of supplements: I rarely ever order them for a patient with a meal. I prefer for them to eat their regular food with a meal and then to have supplements between meals for additional calories then.

I find that providing them with 3 meals, 1 snack and 1-2 supplements per day often works best for our goals for that patient.

I figured out that a smoothie would be a great way to change up their typical supplements, give them a different taste and provide a fun in-between meal. You can use any type of fruit for this recipe. I used peaches and mangoes because I found some awesome ones at my grocery store.

If you know someone who may not eat very well or who needs additional calories, you may consider trying a nutritional supplement such as this.
