How to Improve Health in the Workplace
If you are an employer in the United States, you probably have at least a few employees that have poor health habits. This can result in poor productivity that can spread to even the healthiest people in your company. Fortunately, there are various things that you can do to prevent this.
Here are the top three ways to improve the health of your employees:
Offer Incentives for Healthy Lifestyle Choices
When promoting positive health choices at the office, you should keep in mind that office culture itself is part of the problem. By using monetary or other kinds of incentives, you can convince employees that there are many benefits to leading a healthy life. This positive reinforcement can go a long way in improving health and increasing the productivity of your office. If your office has a cafeteria, you can offer meal vouchers for healthy dishes such as salads and soups. You may also be able to provide stipends for gym memberships and activities such as marathons and endurance races. Your employees are far more likely to change their lifestyles if it does not cost any money to do so.
Hire a Registered Dietitian
The diets of American employees that work in offices are often quite poor. Imbalances in nutrition result in weight gain, low energy and a variety of diseases. By hiring a registered dietitian, your employees can be educated in the harm that their diets are doing to their bodies. A registered dietitian will also be able to offer suggestions on healthy office snacks. A proper diet change can promote high energy and enthusiasm, so hiring a registered dietitian can be quite beneficial for employers looking to increase productivity.
As a registered dietitian myself, I love helping people to make healthy food choices. At my current job, employees often choose to eat quite poorly. Lunches often consist of Chinese food, pizza, fried chicken, corned beef sandwiches, etc. I wish that my fellow employees would make healthier choices so that they would feel better and be more productive. I know that when I eat poorly, I definitely have lower productivity through the day.
Use a Wellness Program
Wellness programs can promote good health habits from a variety of perspectives. Most of these existing programs analyze health for the benefit of the individual employee, but healthy employees mean less sick time and more time on the job. The main aspect of wellness programs is health education through a variety of coaching methods. Employees may be informed in-person, over the phone, or on the internet. This will teach them about health risks and proper health habits. A top-quality wellness program will also promote healthy habits by changing the environment and culture of the office. Health will also be combined with business goals. Health screening and evaluation programs will also be implemented. These programs can be handled internally or they can be outsourced to reputable companies such as Wellness Corporate Solutions.
