As I have blogged about before, I am a big fan of probiotics. When I have been on an antibiotic in the past, I have taken probiotics to help restore the good bacteria in my body. Probiotics are also recommended for those with digestive issues to help regulate digestion and for digestive system balance. I recommend these fairly often at the nursing home that I work at for my patients. Probiotics can not only help you when you are sick but can also help keep you healthy.

Along with taking probiotics, there are many things that we can do to stay healthy in the winter.

Here are some tips:

Apples
Loving the apples and citrus fruit!

-Eat a balanced diet- Just because summer produce is not available does not mean that you should skip out on your fruits and veggies. Choose meals rich in whole grains, lean proteins, low-fat dairy, fruits and vegetables. Any produce that is rich in color is usually especially high in nutrients (beets, sweet potatoes, citrus fruit, bell peppers, etc.).

-To help beat the winter blues, get some exercise- I know personally, if I do not exercise for a couple of days, I start to feel down. Walking on the treadmill (or outside if the weather is not too bad), lifting weights and doing exercise videos are my favorite ways to stay in shape during the winter months and beat feeling blue. Aim for 3-5 days per week at least of 30 minutes or more of exercise.

-Take your vitamins- Not everyone needs a vitamin if your diet is diverse and healthy but I know in the winter months, I like to take a multivitamin (rich in vitamin D) and omega-3 fatty acid supplements to help meet my nutrient needs to help me feel my best.

Love a mix of yogurt, strawberries and cereal- with naturally occurring probiotics.

I recently learned about Insync Probiotics which are sold at CVS. Insync uses GI Guard which is a gradual release caplet that protects the probiotics from heat, moisture and stomach acids that can be damaging. This helps the bacteria to stay alive which makes it the most effective it can be. It can help you to feel your best in these nasty winter months when sickness is so much more prevalent. #naturalprobiotic

It uses 6 different strains of bacteria including Bifidobacterium infantis, Proprietary Probiotic blend (Bifidobacterium lactis, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum) and Proprietary Probiotic blend (Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus). CVS offers many different products to help keep you healthy this winter and to help get you back to feeling healthy when you are sick.
